From 2026 – increased benefits for foster care of children: here's how much it is and where to apply

Lithuania is set to increase foster care benefits for children starting in 2026, adjusting the amounts based on age and needs.

Beginning in 2026, Lithuania will enhance financial support for families caring for children through the foster care system as part of an initiative to mitigate declining birth rates in the country. The new regulations will specify monthly allowances of 384.8 euros for children under six, 444 euros for those aged six to twelve, and 481 euros for children with disabilities and those aged twelve to eighteen, including those who are continuing their education up to the age of 24.

In addition to the standard payments, there will be a targeted supplement of 296 euros each month for foster parents or caregivers when children are placed in family care, group homes, or with designated caregivers. This supplement aims to provide additional financial support specifically for the guardians of these children, ensuring their welfare and enabling better care.

This policy reflects Lithuania's response to the challenges posed by a decreasing birth rate and aims to strengthen familial structures by providing more substantial financial resources to foster families. By increasing these benefits and ensuring they are need-based, the government hopes to encourage more family involvement in child welfare and foster care, thereby improving outcomes for children in these systems.
