Kuopio market has a remarkably persistent rat problem - the exceptional situation has lasted for over a year

The Kuopio market area in Finland is facing a significant rat infestation that has persisted despite ongoing control efforts for more than a year.

The Kuopio market area has been struggling with an unusually persistent rat problem that has continued for over a year. Despite constant pest control efforts, the city's environment health inspector, Mikko Raatikainen, reports that while some rats have been trapped, new ones continually replace them. This ongoing situation is exceptional, as previous pest control measures have usually shown quicker results in eliminating rats from the area.

The Kuopio market provides a conducive environment for rats, especially during the summer when it becomes bustling with activity and food options from various eateries and unpackaged food stores. Raatikainen highlighted that it can be challenging to attract rats to traps when food is readily available, as bits of food often drop and are available for the rats to consume. This situation is exacerbated by the summer season when the market is especially vibrant, keeping the rat population well-fed and persistent.

To address this rare issue, professionals initiated the rat control efforts in the Kuopio market in late 2024, incurring costs of several thousands of euros. The pest control work was commissioned by both the city of Kuopio and Kuopion Pysäköinti, which oversees the parking hall beneath the market. Despite these efforts, the sporadic presence of food and the constant influx of new rats make the challenge of curbing the rat population a significant public health concern.
