A rat found inside was the last straw – preschool children moved to temporary facilities in Akaa
A preschool in Akaa, Finland, has relocated its students to temporary facilities due to a rodent problem that escalated after a rat was found trapped inside the premises.
The Onni preschool in Akaa has had to implement emergency measures and transfer its children to temporary facilities due to a rodent infestation. The decision came after a rat was discovered trapped in a cage within the school’s interior, prompting immediate action. Reports suggest that efforts to capture rats outside the facility were also underway, confirming a broader issue impacting the aesthetic and safety of the location.
The preschool, which serves over a hundred children and operates under the private Norlandia chain, began addressing the rodent problem after the first sightings were reported at the end of December. Miia Kollin, the country manager for the chain, disclosed that pest control measures had already commenced following the initial findings. However, the discovery of a rat inside was particularly alarming, as such occurrences are rare in indoor settings according to Kollin.
Currently, a full-scale pest management operation is being executed at the Onni preschool, involving multiple traps and motion detectors across the facility. Kollin emphasized that they are closely monitoring the situation, and health authorities will be consulted if no rat activity is detected for a full 24 hours. This incident raises concerns about health and safety standards in childcare facilities and the need for proactive measures against similar issues in the future.
