The municipality attracts with generous benefits, including retirees and immigrants - 'This is a really big deal'

The municipality of Säkylä in Satakunta is implementing measures to combat low birth rates and an aging population by offering housing benefits and gift vouchers to new residents.

The municipality of Säkylä, located in Satakunta, Finland, has launched an initiative aimed at addressing its pressing issues of low birth rates and an aging populace. To attract new residents, including retirees and immigrants, the local government is offering remarkable housing benefits such as six months of free rent for newcomers in municipal apartments. This strategy appears to be effective, as the local mayor, Teijo Mäenpää, reported that one individual has already signed up to move to Säkylä and is seeking rental accommodations.

In addition to free rent, Säkylä is providing financial assistance for those interested in purchasing homes. The municipality promises to cover 5% of the home purchase price, with a maximum cap of 5,000 euros. Furthermore, gift vouchers are being used as a significant incentive, with 500 euro vouchers available for every child under school age, fostering a more family-friendly atmosphere. This initiative is not only aimed at attracting newcomers but also at retaining existing residents by providing them a sense of community and support.

The initiative was announced recently and has already shown promising results, with 50 gift voucher applications submitted within a day of the launch. Mayor Mäenpää expressed his delight at the swift response, indicating that the promotional efforts have reached the intended audience better than anticipated. By implementing these strategies, Säkylä hopes to counteract demographic challenges and forge a more vibrant community for all residents.
