Twins joined at the head undergo third separation surgery in Ribeirão Preto, SP
Twins Heloísa and Helena, who were born joined at the head, have undergone their third surgery for skull separation in Ribeirão Preto, Brazil.
Heloísa and Helena, twin girls from Brazil born conjoined at the head, recently underwent their third surgical procedure aimed at separating their skulls this Saturday at the Hospital das Clínicas in Ribeirão Preto. The surgery began early in the morning and is anticipated to last for about eight hours. The twins, now aged 1 year and 10 months, previously had their second surgery in November 2025, which lasted approximately ten hours and required a recovery period of 19 days before they were discharged from the hospital.
The extensive medical team overseeing the twins' surgeries consists of over 50 specialists from various fields such as neurosurgery, pediatrics, and plastic surgery. They are all working under the guidance of Professor Jayme Farina Junior, ensuring that the twins receive the best possible care. The father of the girls, Amarildo Batista da Silva, has been there for his daughters since the first surgery and expressed his eagerness for them to finally see and play with each other post-surgery, highlighting the emotional and familial aspect of this challenging situation.
This surgery is part of an ongoing medical journey for Heloísa and Helena, which not only involves complex surgical procedures but also emotional and psychological considerations for both the twins and their family. As the girls continue through these medical challenges, their story draws attention to the dedication of medical professionals and the resilience of families facing similar circumstances. It also raises awareness about the ongoing support required for conjoined twins and their families in Brazil and globally.
