State of SP has a 24% decrease in robberies and a 61% decrease in homicide-robberies in January

January saw significant reductions in both robberies and homicide-robberies across the state of São Paulo compared to the same month last year.

In January 2023, the state of São Paulo reported a sharp decline in the number of robberies and homicide-robberies, with a drop of 24% in robberies, totaling 12,128 from 15,972 in January 2022. Homicide-robberies showed an even greater reduction, falling from 18 to 7 incidents, marking a historic low not seen in 26 years. The trends suggest an ongoing improvement in public safety in the region, which officials attribute to various law enforcement initiatives.

In the capital city of São Paulo, the decrease in robberies was recorded at 19.1%, where the number of incidents fell from 9,180 to 7,419 over the same timeframe. The homicide-robberies in the city also dropped from 4 to 2. This continuing trend of decreased violent crime in January corresponds with broader efforts by police forces, as the city has seen a progressive decline in robbery incidents since 2020.

These statistics reflect a growing focus on crime prevention strategies by local authorities. Major Hudson Rosa, the coordinator of the program, noted that the city's historical peak for robberies occurred in January 2020, with 13,535 cases, highlighting the significance of the recent improvements. The data suggests that ongoing initiatives may be making a measurable difference in community safety, further influencing public perception of law enforcement efficacy in the region.
