Hammershøi painting valued at up to 17 million to go to auction

A painting by Vilhelm Hammershøi is set for auction at Sotheby’s in London, with an estimated value between £1.5 million and £2 million.

A significant painting by Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi, valued at between £1.5 million and £2 million, is scheduled to be auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on March 4. This valuation translates to between 12.75 million and 17 million Danish crowns. Hammershøi, who lived from 1864 to 1916, is renowned for his minimalist and recognizable subjects, often featuring still life and interiors, including rooms, windows, doors, or figures viewed from behind.

The specific painting to be auctioned reflects the balcony of Villa Spurveskjul in Virum, a half-timbered house that has been home to many notable Danes. Sotheby’s describes the artwork as captivating, depicting a moonlit scene painted in 1911, and it is one of three known paintings that Hammershøi created showcasing reflections in the oval mirror that hangs in the drawing room of Villa Spurveskjul. The auction house's promotion underscores the significance and rarity of Hammershøi's works in the contemporary art market.

In a related note, another Hammershøi painting, 'Interior. The Music Room, Strandgade 30,' fetched over $9 million in 2023, marking it as the most expensive Danish painting ever sold. This auction further emphasizes the rising value and interest in Danish art on the global market, reflecting a growing appreciation for Hammershøi's unique style and the historical importance of his contributions to art.
