Spring is on the way – but only in the far south

Spring has officially arrived in southern Skåne and Gotland, as temperatures finally rise above freezing.

Spring has made its official arrival in southern Sweden, particularly in southern Skåne and Gotland, as confirmed by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). Meteorologist Emma Rosengren reported that certain areas have sustained average temperatures above zero degrees for at least seven consecutive days, which meets the criteria for declaring meteorological spring. Despite an unusually cold winter, the onset of spring aligns with typical seasonal patterns, indicating a gradual warming trend since mid-February.

Rosengren noted that throughout March, fluctuations in temperature may still occur, reminding residents that spring's arrival can sometimes face setbacks. However, the persistent cold spells characterized by locked conditions are likely behind us, signaling a hopeful turn toward warmer weather. Looking ahead to the weekend, there is a forecast of sunny skies across much of Norrland, suggesting that the northern regions may also experience rising temperatures with the help of sunshine.

The arrival of spring carries implications for agriculture and outdoor activities across Sweden. As temperatures rise, farmers can anticipate a shift in their planting schedules, while outdoor enthusiasts eagerly await the return of milder weather for recreation. The forecast also raises public interest in how quickly spring will transition into summer, hinting at a potentially warm season ahead if current trends continue.
