Young man who faked his kidnapping to extort R$ 300 from his mother with cancer is arrested in Caracaraí

A young man was arrested in Caracaraí after pretending to be kidnapped in an attempt to extort R$ 300 from his mother, who is undergoing cancer treatment.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in Caracaraí, located in southern Roraima, after orchestrating a fake kidnapping to extort R$ 300 from his 69-year-old mother, who is battling cancer. The local police disclosed the information on Friday, detailing the elaborate plan that involved his accomplice, a 41-year-old man, who made threatening phone calls to the mother from Manaus, where she resides.

The crime unfolded on Wednesday when the mother received alarming calls from a man identifying himself as "Ton," demanding a ransom of R$ 300. The caller claimed that her son was tied to a tree due to a drug debt and threatened to harm him further if the ransom was not paid. In a state of distress, the mother immediately contacted the police, who intervened promptly, leading to the swift apprehension of the suspect.

Delegado Bruno Gabriel from the Caracaraí police station noted that the quick response was crucial in preventing any potential harm to the young man and in protecting the victim from being extorted. This incident sheds light on the desperate measures some individuals may resort to in financial crises, particularly within vulnerable families, and raises questions about mental health and substance abuse issues that may play a part in such crimes.
