Government announces transfer of 27 horses from Fernando de Noronha to Recife after deaths and allegations of mistreatment

The local government of Fernando de Noronha has announced the transfer of 27 neglected horses to Recife following recent deaths and reports of mistreatment.

The administrator of Fernando de Noronha, VirgΓlio Oliveira, has announced that 27 horses will be transferred from the island to Recife starting in March. This decision comes in light of the deaths of two horses within just over a month, along with allegations of mistreatment. Oliveira stated that the transfer aims to ensure better care and living conditions for these animals, amidst an ongoing effort to address their welfare.

According to the administrator, the local government has partnered with the Pernambuco Agency for Agricultural Defense and Inspection (Adagro) to facilitate this transfer. A total of 67 horses have been identified on the island, out of which 40 are under proper care of their owners. The remaining 27 horses, which are abandoned, will be prioritized for relocation and rehabilitation. The local administration has taken the initiative to evaluate the animals, ensuring that those remaining will be adequately cared for moving forward.

To prepare for the transfer, the government plans to construct six stalls in the Animal Surveillance Center located in Vila do Trinta, which will temporarily house the horses before they are moved to Recife. The animals will be transported in groups of six to ensure their safety and proper handling during the transition. This initiative reflects the administration's commitment to animal welfare and responsible management of the island's equine population, following the recent tragic events that underscored the need for intervention and reform in the treatment of these horses.
