Secretary of Itumbiara (GO) shot his children while they slept and then committed suicide, concludes police

The police have concluded an investigation into the deaths of Itumbiara's government secretary, who shot his two children before taking his own life.

The Civil Police of Goiás has finalized its investigation into a tragic incident involving Thales Naves Alves Machado, the governmental secretary of Itumbiara, who shot and killed his two young sons before turning the weapon on himself. The event, classified as a double homicide followed by suicide, occurred on February 11, when Machado, 40, attacked his sons, Miguel, 12, and Benício, 8, while they slept in their home. The investigation revealed that Miguel succumbed to his injuries immediately, while Benício was hospitalized in critical condition and later died on February 13.

Investigators, led by Delegate Felipe Soares Sala from the Homicide Investigation Group (GIH), reported that the tragic events unfolded between 11:39 PM and midnight. Prior to the incident, Machado exhibited unusual behavior, having reached out to a close acquaintance to ask about his ex-partner, signaling potentially troubling signs leading up to the horrific act. Such behavior may indicate a buildup of personal distress, contributing to the tragic outcome of the events.

The deaths of the two children, combined with the circumstances of their father's actions, have sparked significant concern and discussions about mental health and family dynamics in Brazil. With the investigation closed, attention is now turning to how communities can address the underlying issues that lead to such devastating incidents, emphasizing the need for mental health support and better resources for families in distress.
