Severe sanction for Argentine tennis player Leonardo Aboian: nearly seven years of suspension for match-fixing and facilitating betting
Argentine tennis player Leonardo Aboian has been suspended for six years and nine months for match-fixing and facilitating betting, as announced by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA).
Leonardo Aboian, a 27-year-old Argentine tennis player, has received a significant suspension of six years and nine months due to serious offenses including match-fixing and facilitating betting activities. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reported that Aboian admitted to fixing eight of his own matches in both singles and doubles during events on the ITF World Tennis Tour and the ATP Challenger circuit between 2018 and 2025. This admission came with a full acknowledgment of charges against him, including failure to report corruption attempts.
The ITIA stated that in addition to the lengthy suspension, Aboian was fined $40,000, with $25,000 of that fine being suspended. His cooperation with the investigation, including admitting all charges without contesting the sanction, reflects the growing scrutiny and seriousness of match-fixing in professional sports, particularly tennis. This type of misconduct not only damages the integrity of the sport but also undermines the trust of fans and stakeholders alike.
Aboian's case underscores ongoing challenges within the sport concerning corruption and the regulation of betting practices. Suspension durations for such offenses can serve as a deterrent to other athletes, promoting a cleaner environment in professional tennis. As the sport continues to evolve with increased oversight, this incident highlights the critical need for players to adhere to ethical standards and the potential consequences of failing to do so.
