Birth rate in Japan decreases for the tenth consecutive year

Japan's birth rate fell again, marking a decade-long decline, with 705,809 babies born in the latest year, alongside an increase in marriages and a slight decrease in deaths.

Japan is experiencing a significant demographic challenge, with birth rates decreasing for the tenth consecutive year. Preliminary data from the Health Ministry indicates that a total of 705,809 babies were born in the year, which is a 2.1% decline compared to 2024. This figure includes births from Japanese citizens in Japan, births from foreigners in Japan, and babies born abroad to Japanese citizens. In contrast to the declining birth rates, the number of marriages showed a slight increase, with 505,656 couples tying the knot in 2025, up by 1.1%. Meanwhile, the divorce rate has decreased by 3.7%, totaling 182,969 cases, indicating a slightly more stable family structure despite declining birth figures.
