The Ministry of Culture/ Supreme Audit Office is Failing in Its Management Role, Not Just Concerning Šimkovićová

The Slovak Ministry of Culture has been criticized for its inefficient management of large projects, according to a report by the Supreme Audit Office.

The Supreme Audit Office of Slovakia has released a report indicating that the Ministry of Culture has struggled with managing significant cultural projects, resulting in uncoordinated decisions and ineffective control mechanisms. The report analyzed the operations of the National Museum and National Gallery, as well as the restoration efforts of Krásna Hôrka and Spiš Castle. The auditors highlighted systemic failures, including frequent personnel changes and a lack of a long-term strategy for cultural development in the ministry.

According to the auditors, the issues observed are not solely the responsibility of the current Minister of Culture, Martina Šimkovićová, but extend back over a decade across various administrations. They pointed out that ineffective management within organizations under the ministry poses a threat to the protection of Slovakia's cultural heritage. The absence of a coherent strategy and lack of continuity in decision-making means that the ministry cannot create a predictable environment necessary for fostering cultural projects and for the support of cultural institutions.

The findings raise concerns about the future of cultural management in Slovakia, as the Ministry’s inability to establish a clear direction and consistent policies could hinder the progress of cultural initiatives. This situation calls for immediate attention to reform the management practices and to develop a robust strategic plan that addresses the challenges identified by the auditors, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of the country's cultural assets.
