Šimkovičová in Television Discussion After a Long Time / Culture is Rising, She Claims. However, SNG Attendance Has Dropped by Half
Slovak Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová claimed in a recent TV discussion that cultural institutions are thriving despite a reported 50% drop in attendance at the Slovak National Gallery.
Slovak Culture Minister Martina Šimkovičová recently participated in a television debate after a prolonged absence from public discussions. During the broadcast on TA3, she stated that the cultural sector is 'on the rise' due to her leadership. However, her claims were juxtaposed with concerning statistics released by the initiative Open Culture, which revealed that attendance at the Slovak National Gallery (SNG) fell by 50% last year compared to previous years.
In her defense, Šimkovičová explained her limited engagement with the media, stating that she requires energy for her responsibilities in the culture sector. She typically provides interviews to alternative journalist Mimi Šramová rather than mainstream media. This raises questions about her accountability and transparency as a government official, especially in light of the alarming decline in visitor numbers to key cultural institutions which she oversees.
The data released by Open Culture through a request for information indicated that in 2023, the Slovak National Gallery welcomed 134,000 visitors, slightly decreasing to 124,000 in 2024. This significant drop in attendance last year, which saw only 65,000 visitors, compounded by the recent reopening of the SNG's main building after extensive renovations, highlights the challenges faced by cultural institutions in recovering from past disruptions and fulfilling their societal roles effectively.
