Airships Coming to the Gulf of Finland
The Finnish navy is set to conduct a NATO-related trial involving unmanned airships in the Gulf of Finland this March.
The Finnish Navy will be organizing a NATO exercise in March, testing unmanned airships developed by the Finnish company Kelluu Oy. The Dynamic Messenger exercise will take place in the Upinniemi area, where these airships will be launched to evaluate their performance in the harsh winter conditions of the Baltic Sea. This testing period is scheduled from the 2nd to the 13th of March and aims to assess the systems under various daylight and weather conditions.
Kelluu Oy’s airships are noteworthy for their capability to stay aloft for up to 12 hours, which is longer than typical drones, making them potentially more effective for surveillance and reconnaissance operations. These airships provide more detailed environmental imagery than satellites can deliver and operate silently, which is particularly advantageous in military applications. The previous similar trial conducted in Upinniemi took place in June 2025 and aimed at advancing the technology around unmanned aerial systems.
NATO is pushing for the adoption of innovative technologies to enhance its military advantage, and this exercise reflects their commitment to integrating new technologies into operational practices. The use of unmanned surface vessels and other platforms is expected to progress significantly through this operational testing. As NATO focuses on strengthening its capabilities, Finland's involvement highlights its role in regional security collaboration and technological development in military applications.
