The Gulf of Finland is almost completely frozen – A hovercraft was put into operation in the Kotka archipelago

Due to challenging conditions in the Gulf of Finland, a hovercraft has been deployed in the Kotka archipelago to maintain transportation services, as the ice has hindered ferry operations.

In the Kotka archipelago, located in the eastern Gulf of Finland, the onset of winter conditions has led to the implementation of a hovercraft for transportation purposes. As the water levels in the region are low and the ice cover has significantly increased, the ferry service provided by Otava has had to suspend its operations temporarily between Kotka and Haapasaari. The hovercraft service has become a popular alternative, particularly with the onset of the ski holiday week, which has attracted many passengers looking for transport options.

The hovercraft, which can accommodate 5-6 people along with their luggage, operates under tight constraints due to the freezing conditions. This situation reflects a greater challenge in navigating the often treacherous frozen waters in the Gulf of Finland, where only specialized vessels like the hovercraft can manage the icy terrain. The captain of the hovercraft, Tuomas Juhantila, noted the unusual demand for this mode of transport, as it is not a common sight for the travelers in this part of Finland.

The freezing conditions and ice build-up in the Gulf of Finland have reached a level where a standard ferry cannot access many of the islands. Consequently, this winter has been one of significant ice accumulation, leading to adaptations in transportation methods in the region. Maintaining access to Haapasaari and other islands is crucial for the residents living there year-round, underscoring the importance of reliable transportation even amid challenging weather and environmental conditions.
