The Wonderful Performance of 'Gamini' in Kuno: It Gave Birth to 4 Cubs, Not 3
Gamini, a female cheetah in Kuno National Park, has given birth to four cubs instead of the initially reported three, marking a significant success for India’s cheetah reintroduction program.
In Kuno National Park, the success story of 'Project Cheetah' has become even more remarkable with the recent birth of four cubs by female cheetah Gamini, instead of just three as previously reported. This confirmation was shared by the Union Minister for Forests and Environment, Bhupender Yadav, via social media. On February 18, when Gamini gave birth, initial monitoring only detected three cubs; however, upon closer observation by the field staff and veterinarians, a fourth cub was discovered nestled among the bushes. All four cubs are reported to be healthy and are developing normally.
The announcement of the fourth cub substantially boosts the numbers for cheetahs born in India, bringing the total count to 28 cubs with the overall population reaching 39. This birth marks a significant achievement for the Project Cheetah initiative, which aims to reintroduce cheetahs into India after they went extinct in the country. Gamini has now contributed to this project for the second time, helping to reinforce the program's potential for success and sustainability.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav lauded this achievement as a significant milestone for 'Project Cheetah', expressing gratitude towards the dedication and hard work of the scientists involved in the project. This development not only emphasizes India's commitment to wildlife conservation but also enhances global awareness of cheetah preservation efforts, ultimately contributing to biodiversity and ecosystem health in the region.
