The Lubka family submits an appeal complaint

The family of slain entrepreneur and politician Andris Lubka has filed an appeal against the 18-year prison sentence given to Igor Hait.

The family of Andris Lubka, who was murdered, has officially submitted an appeal regarding the 18-year prison sentence imposed on Igor Hait. According to the victim's representative, Viktorija Jarkina-Toča, the family believes the court's ruling, while lawful, did not impose a sufficiently severe punishment. They argue that the sentence fails to serve as an adequate deterrent and does not effectively instill an understanding of the legal obligations individuals have to respect laws, particularly concerning the prohibition against murder.

The victims' attorney further stated that they do not see any mitigating circumstances in Hait's actions that would lessen his culpability. Hait's apology, they argue, lacks sincerity as he has not fully acknowledged his guilt in his statements. Additionally, the family contends that there are aggravating factors present in the case, such as providing false testimonies and using a firearm in a public place, as well as the fact that the murder occurred in the presence of a minor. This perspective indicates their belief that a harsher sentence is warranted to reflect the severity of the crime committed.

Previously, the Latgale District Court in Daugavpils had sentenced Hait to 18 years in prison, along with three years of probation supervision. The Lubka family's appeal highlights their demands for justice not only for their own loss but also for greater accountability within the legal system regarding violent crimes. By challenging the sentence, they hope to prompt a reconsideration of the legal penalties associated with such acts and reinforce societal norms against violence.
