Twelve new elements in Greece's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Greece's Ministry of Culture has announced the registration of twelve new elements and the recognition of a Best Practice in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The Greek Ministry of Culture has officially registered twelve new elements and a Best Practice in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, following the implementation of the 2006 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The proposals for these elements were meticulously prepared and submitted by the Directorate of Modern Cultural Heritage and the National Scientific Committee for the implementation of the Convention (UNESCO, 2003). With this latest addition, the National Inventory now comprises a total of 164 elements and one recognized Best Practice for preserving intangible cultural heritage.

Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni emphasized that the registration of these new elements reflects collaboration with communities and relevant entities aimed at safeguarding traditions and promoting cultural transmission. The initiative not only preserves Greece's rich cultural practices but also encourages local engagement and recognition of the significance of intangible cultural heritage. The twelve new entries, as well as the distinguished practice, are expected to further enhance understanding and appreciation of Greece's cultural identity.

This record is indicative of Greece’s commitment to preserving its diverse cultural heritage. By aligning with international conventions and emphasizing community participation, Greece seeks to protect its intangible cultural legacies for future generations while fostering awareness of the importance of cultural diversity in a global context.
