Interpol Operation in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru Against Explosive Components

A coordinated Interpol operation in Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru led to numerous inspections and the seizure of significant amounts of explosives and components used for making bombs.

Law enforcement agencies from Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru conducted a coordinated operation for twelve days in November, spearheaded by Interpol, targeting cross-border trafficking of chemical products and components used to manufacture explosive devices. This extensive campaign involved more than 50,000 inspections at borders and ports, resulting in three arrests and the significant seizure of 4,000 detonators, two tons of explosives, 60 meters of fuse, 10,450 liters of diesel, and 18 tanks of liquefied petroleum gas.

Interpol released a statement detailing the operation, highlighting that one of the detained individuals was a Peruvian national who was wanted in his home country and subject to a Red Notice from the international police agency. His arrest in Argentina was made possible through the intelligence shared during this operation, demonstrating strong inter-agency coordination and the effectiveness of international cooperation in tackling organized crime related to explosives.

This operation underscores the ongoing challenges of combating transnational crime, particularly concerning the illegal trafficking of materials that can be used for terrorism and organized crime. The successful outcomes of this coordinated effort may lead to more extensive international collaborations among police forces in the region, aimed at enhancing security and preventing the illegal use of explosive materials across borders.
