Ecuador and Colombia will form a commission to investigate the report of explosives found in the neighboring country

Ecuador and Colombia have agreed to establish a joint commission to investigate the discovery of explosives in Colombia's territory, following a meeting between defense officials from both nations.

Ecuador and Colombia are taking steps to address a recent incident involving explosives found on Colombian territory, as announced by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Defense. A meeting was held on March 18, 2026, between Ecuador's Defense Minister Gian Carlo Loffredo and General Henry Delgado, along with their Colombian counterparts. The discussion aimed to verify information regarding a military operation that Ecuador conducted, which was deemed legitimate under the framework of a Non-International Armed Conflict, executed within Ecuador's own territory.

As a result of the meeting, both countries agreed to form a Binational Technical Commission tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosives' appearance in Colombia. This commission will conduct an on-site investigation to ascertain how these explosives came to be in Colombian territory. The necessity for this collaboration reflects the ongoing regional security concerns shared by both nations, particularly in the context of military operations and cross-border issues.

The Colombian president, Gustavo Petro, had raised concerns the day before, indicating that Ecuador had conducted a bomb operation that led to the discovery of these explosives. This diplomatic initiative emphasizes the desire for cooperation and transparency between Ecuador and Colombia, seeking to ensure both countries can manage and mitigate security threats that arise from their shared borders and to prevent further misunderstandings that could escalate tensions between the two nations.
