Lithuanian Caught in Kaunas After Returning from Ireland, International Search Launched by Latvian Police
A Lithuanian man, 32, was detained in Kaunas after arriving from Dublin, as he is wanted by Latvian police under a European arrest warrant.
On Thursday, upon the arrival of a flight from Dublin at Kaunas Airport, officials from the Vilnius Border Guard Detachment discovered that a 32-year-old Lithuanian passenger was wanted by the Latvian police. The man, who has been registered as an individual without a permanent residence, is subject to a European arrest warrant, which has been issued for his apprehension in Latvia. Following this discovery, the border guards notified the Latvian authorities while detaining the passenger in temporary custody at the airport.
This incident highlights the ongoing cooperation among law enforcement agencies in the Baltic region, particularly between Lithuania and Latvia. The quick response by the VSAT (State Border Guard Service) underscores the effectiveness of the border control measures in place at Lithuanian airports. Over the previous two years, VSAT officials have detained a significant number of individuals (84 total) at airports, reflecting a proactive approach to ensuring safety and compliance with international law enforcement requests.
In 2022, the VSAT apprehended a total of 803 wanted individuals, the majority of whom were Lithuanian citizens. This statistic indicates an increasing trend in international legal cooperation and the migration challenges facing the region. The recent case involving the Lithuanian national returning from Ireland serves as a reminder of the complex security landscape and the necessary vigilance required by border security forces to tackle such international issues effectively.
