North Coast of SP registers the highest accumulated rainfall in the state and has new damage

The North Coast of São Paulo experienced the highest rainfall in the state, causing extensive damage including the destruction of a bridge in Ubatuba.

Between Thursday (26) and Friday (27), the North Coast of São Paulo recorded the most significant rainfall accumulation in the state, resulting in severe damages across the region. Ubatuba received 269 millimeters of rain within just 24 hours, while São Sebastião saw 185 millimeters. The intense rainfall has exacerbated existing conditions, leading to flooding and landslides, particularly following heavy downpours on the night of Thursday.

Ubatuba was notably hard-hit; the strength of the rain led to the destruction of the Ponte Pênsil, isolating residents in the Ubatumirim neighborhood. This event marks a critical point in the ongoing struggle with severe weather effects in the region, illustrating vulnerabilities in local infrastructure. Neighborhoods such as Foz da Caixa, Camburi, Almada, Picinguaba, and Itamambuca also experienced significant flooding and damage, further highlighting the area's challenges in responding to such extreme weather phenomena.

Emergency services, including the Corpo de Bombeiros, are actively responding to the situation, addressing the aftermath of the disaster and providing assistance to affected residents. This incident raises concerns regarding the resilience of urban planning and infrastructure in coastal areas prone to heavy rains, as well as the need for robust disaster response mechanisms as climate patterns shift and intensify in the future.
