103 Millimeters of Rain Causes Damage in Belo Horizonte; VIDEOS
Heavy rainfall in Belo Horizonte led to significant damage, especially in the Vale do Jatobá neighborhood, with emergency services reporting 103.4 millimeters of rain over a short period.
On October 26 and 27, Belo Horizonte experienced severe rainfall, resulting in considerable damage primarily in the Vale do Jatobá neighborhood. According to the Civil Defense, the area received 103.4 millimeters of rain from Thursday evening until Friday morning, with an alarming 70 millimeters falling in just a two-hour window, marking the highest accumulation for the capital during this period. Emergency services are currently assessing the aftermath of this weather event. The heavy rain caused rushing waters to remove sections of the asphalt along Avenida Agenor Nonato de Souza, carrying away debris, trash, and even sections of pavement into the nearby roadside and a creek that runs through the area. Additionally, the force of the water twisted protective grates around the creek and compromised an embankment next to a supermarket parking lot, where the entrance gate was swept away by the increasing flow of water. Traffic disruptions followed, particularly on Rua Carlos Pinto Coelho, as mud and debris made navigation difficult for vehicles, causing delays and detours. A municipal early childhood education school was affected externally by the flooding, although residents reported no significant damage to the facility itself. The impacts of this heavy rain highlight ongoing concerns regarding urban infrastructure and the city's ability to handle such extreme weather events, raising questions about preparedness and response protocols in similar situations.
