Heavy rain in BH leaves streets flooded and knocks down trees and posts

Belo Horizonte experienced severe rainfall leading to street flooding and downed trees and power poles.

On Saturday afternoon, Belo Horizonte was hit by a heavy downpour that resulted in widespread flooding throughout the city, causing significant disruptions. The rainstorm was accompanied by alerts from the Civil Defense about geological risks, hinting at the potential for landslides in certain areas. As the storm progressed, residents reported extensive rainfall and thundershower, with the worst impacts noted in specific regions such as the northeast and east parts of the city.

Particularly in the Caiçara neighborhood of the northwest, the torrential rain began around 5 PM, which was also noted in the central area of Belo Horizonte. Videos showcased the severity of the situation, particularly in the Praça Sete area, where flooding was evident. Reports from the Civil Defense indicated that by 5:10 PM, heavy rains were affecting five out of the ten regions of the city, with the eastern area experiencing the most intense rainfall.

The flooding not only disrupted traffic on major roads but also led to physical damages, including the overturning of motorcycles and some vehicles being struck by the rapid influx of water. Areas like Avenida Silviano Brandão, which traverses neighborhoods like Floresta and Horto, witnessed particularly severe conditions as the waterflow overwhelmed streets, raising concerns about safety and ecological impacts due to the likelihood of subsequent landslides and other geological hazards in the aftermath of such intense rainfall.
