Two Foreign Tourists Die at Train Crossing in Japan, Sanyo Electric Railway Disputes Compensation Claims from Families
Sanyo Electric Railway intends to dispute compensation claims from the families of two Chinese tourists who died after being struck by a train at a crossing in Kobe, Japan.
The incident, which occurred on January 9, 2025, involved two female tourists from China being hit by a Sanyo Electric Railway train after they mistakenly waited inside the crossing gates. Their families have filed a lawsuit seeking 139 million yen in damages, but Sanyo Electric Railway is contesting their claims, asserting that they had adequate safety measures in place. The families allege that the small and steep area between the crossing gates and a nearby road confused the victims regarding where they should wait during a traffic signal, citing a lack of preventive measures by the railway. In response, the railway argues that the design of the waiting area did not hinder safety, claiming that there was no negligence on their part.
