Zoo: the polar bear's favorite treat is ice cream with fruit and blood

At Tallinn Zoo, polar bears enjoy a special treat of fruit and blood ice cream and spend much of their time relaxing.

Heiko Kruusi, an educational specialist at Tallinn Zoo, shared insights about polar bears on the morning show 'Terevisioon'. According to Kruusi, polar bears primarily consume beef, but on special occasions they are treated to a favorite delicacy: ice cream made with fruit and blood. The zoo has chosen to celebrate International Polar Bear Day on February 28, one day after the global observance on February 27.

Kruusi explained that a significant portion of a polar bear's day, about two-thirds, is spent in a state of relaxation, referred to as 'doing nothing'. The remaining third of their day is divided between walking and swimming, with only a small percentage dedicated to other activities. He highlighted that zoo visitors often wonder why the animals appear inactive, prompting him to remind them that, in the wild, polar bears also spend most of their time simply existing without the need to engage actively.

The discussion raises awareness about the natural behavior of polar bears and the importance of understanding their needs in captivity. With the upcoming celebration of polar bears at the zoo, it serves as a reminder of the species' remarkable traits and the ongoing efforts to ensure their well-being in an artificial environment.
