Utilization of Expo's Surplus: Legacy Conference Discusses Application of Rings, Memorial Hall, and Advanced Technologies
A legacy conference held in Tokyo discussed the allocation of surplus funds from the Osaka-Kansai Expo towards various initiatives.
On the 27th, the second meeting of the national 'Outcome Verification Committee' was held in Tokyo to discuss the legacy of the Osaka-Kansai Expo, which concluded in October last year. The anticipated surplus from ticket sales and merchandising, estimated at between 32 to 37 billion yen, is being looked at for potential investment in preserving the Expo's legacies and expanding creative activities associated with it. The committee, comprised of officials from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, as well as leaders from Osaka's city and prefectural governments and the business sector, outlined three primary objectives for the use of the surplus funds.
Among the plans is the initial maintenance and renovation of the northeast section of the Expo's iconic roof ring, as well as funding for the upcoming 'EXPO2025 Memorial Hall' to be constructed near the ring. The memorial hall is expected to feature exhibition spaces that incorporate advanced technologies, such as virtual reality (VR), to allow visitors to experience aspects of the Expo. Details on how much of the surplus will be allocated to each project will be decided in future meetings of the committee.
Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura also announced intentions to establish a public-private partnership by the end of March to explore the practical applications of cutting-edge technologies showcased at the Expo, including regenerative medicine and carbon neutrality. This initiative aims to sustain the innovative momentum generated by the event and leverage it for broader societal benefits.
