The Saaremaa–Hiiumaa Ice Road is Completely Closed for This Year
The official ice road connecting Saaremaa and Hiiumaa islands in Estonia has been closed for the season due to rising water levels making travel unsafe.
The Estonian Transport Administration has announced that the official ice road connecting the islands of Saaremaa and Hiiumaa has been permanently closed for the season as of Friday. This closure comes as weather conditions have deteriorated, causing rising sea water to encroach upon the ice, compromising safety for motorists. Although the ice road provided a rare opportunity for travel between the islands, it has become unsafe due to changes in the weather.
Earlier in the season, the Transport Administration had been optimistic, having opened three ice roads after a prolonged cold period allowed for sufficient ice thickness. The Saaremaa–Hiiumaa ice road, which spans 17 kilometers, was opened on February 8 following significant public demand and criticism regarding informal routes. However, the conditions quickly shifted, leading to its closure just 13 days after it was opened.
In addition to the Saaremaa–Hiiumaa road, the Kihnu ice road is currently closed, although there remains a possibility of reopening it if weather permits. Plans for an alternative route for the Vormsi ice road are also underway, with hopes to open it under suitable weather conditions. Verston Estonia OÜ is responsible for maintaining all ice roads in the region, highlighting the challenges of maintaining safe access to these islands during winter months.
