Transport Administration closed the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa ice road
Transport Administration has closed the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa ice road due to rising sea levels making it unsafe for travel.
The Transport Administration of Estonia has officially closed the Hiiumaa-Saaremaa ice road on Saturday due to rising sea levels, which have made traveling on the ice unsafe. Reports indicated that water had accumulated on the ice road, leading to hazardous conditions for vehicles. This announcement was made through the agency's social media channels to inform the public of the situation.
This closure is not the first for the ice road, which is a crucial transport link between Hiiumaa and Saaremaa islands. The first ice road was opened on February 8 of this year, establishing a temporary route that allows for transit between the two islands during winter months when other travel options may be limited. However, the administration noted that closures could happen on short notice depending on weather conditions.
Previously, the ice road was closed on February 15 due to cracks caused by the rising water levels, but it was reopened two days later. The fluctuating weather patterns this winter have been a concern for both the Transport Administration and travelers, highlighting the need for monitoring and timely updates to ensure safety on the ice roads.
