Prosecutor Repa on the Mýtnik Case: I Was Nervous Before the Verdict. I Lived With It for Five Years

Prosecutor Ondrej Repa reflects on the challenges and emotions he faced during the Mýtnik case against oligarch Jozef Brhel and others.

Prosecutor Ondrej Repa has overseen numerous extensive cases, but he considers the Mýtnik case to be his most demanding. In this high-profile case, he faced a team of ten defenders representing oligarch Jozef Brhel, his son, and additional accused individuals. Repa's task was to prove their guilt related to secret tenders at the financial administration during František Imrecze's leadership, which he partially succeeded in doing. The Specialized Criminal Court, led by Judge Ján Hrubala and judges Ján Giertli and Rastislav Stieranka, convicted Brhel's group for laundering the proceeds of criminal activity.

However, the court acquitted the elder Jozef Brhel of charges related to public procurement manipulation and violating duties while managing someone else's property, stating that while manipulations occurred, Brhel was not involved directly in them. Nonetheless, both he and his son profited from illegally obtained contracts. Reflecting on the moments leading up to the court's decision, Repa expressed a mix of emotions, including anxiety, as he had been intertwined with this case for over five years, showcasing the personal investment that comes with prosecuting complex legal matters involving powerful figures in Slovakia.
