Finland's national economy grew slightly last year
Finland's GDP volume increased by 0.2% in 2025, according to Statistics Finland, with growth noted in private consumption despite a general decline in overall consumption for the year.
According to Statistics Finland, the volume of Finland's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 0.2% in 2025. The growth was notably stronger in the last quarter, with a 0.4% increase compared to the previous quarter. Overall demand in the economy also saw modest growth of 0.2% in the last quarter compared to the previous one, indicating a slight recovery in economic activity as the year came to a close.
Private consumption figures showed positive trends towards the end of the year, continuing the increase seen in the previous quarter. Notably, spending on durable goods turned a corner in the last quarter of the year, signaling increased consumer confidence or need. However, even with positive signs in certain consumption categories, the total consumption actually decreased throughout 2025, reflecting underlying challenges in the economy despite some upticks in specific areas.
Comparatively, Sweden's GDP grew by 1.7% and the EU area by 1.6% in the same timeframe, highlighting Finland's slower economic growth relative to its neighbors. This economic performance may have implications for Finland's economic policies moving forward, necessitating a closer examination of consumer spending trends and overall economic health to better align with regional growth rates.
