Finnish politician Pekka Haavisto has been appointed as the UN Secretary-General's new special envoy to Sudan, leaving his parliamentary role in the process.
Pekka Haavisto, a long-serving member of the Finnish Parliament and former Minister of Foreign Affairs, has announced his departure from Parliament after being appointed as the UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres's new special envoy to Sudan. This position, which he will hold as a one-year appointment that can be renewed, directs him to report directly to Guterres. Haavisto mentioned that he is currently unaware of the salary associated with this new role. In his place, former MP Mari Holopainen will succeed him in Parliament.
