A new position for Pekka Haavisto

Pekka Haavisto has been appointed by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the new special envoy to Sudan.

The United Nations has recently announced the appointment of Pekka Haavisto as the new special envoy to Sudan, a position previously held by Ramtane Lamamra, the former foreign minister of Algeria. This appointment was made public via the UN's official channels on Tuesday.

Haavisto, a member of the Green League, has been a continuity representative in the Finnish parliament since 2007 and served as Finland's Minister for Foreign Affairs under Prime Minister Sanna Marin from 2019 to 2023. His extensive background includes a significant focus on international peace mediation, having previously worked as the EU's special representative in Sudan and Darfur from 2005 to 2007, as well as a UN special advisor during the Darfur peace process in 2007.

Between 2009 and 2017, he also held the position of special representative of the Foreign Minister for crises in Africa. Haavisto's broad experience in international affairs and peace negotiations positions him well for this new role, as he steps into a critical situation in Sudan that has seen ongoing challenges and conflicts in recent years, highlighting the importance of his appointment in addressing these issues.
