Students from educational institutions in Gwangju whose registrations were canceled ahead of the March school start must be quickly helped
There are calls to urgently assist students in Gwangju whose registrations in educational institutions were canceled before the March school year begins.
As the March school year approaches, there is increasing pressure to urgently address the situation of students from Gwangju whose registrations in educational institutions have been canceled. The civic group ‘Citizens' Group for a Society Without Academic Backgrounds’ has called on the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education to quickly formulate measures for the hundreds of affected students who find themselves in an unstable situation due to these cancellations. The Office of Education recently canceled the registration of two educational facilities, stirring concerns about the future of these students.
Prior to the cancellations, the Gwangju education office raised concerns over one alternative educational institution, which had faced criticism for its partisan approach to history education, including controversial materials that questioned individual beliefs during staff recruitment. Another facility, a private academy, was also implicated for operating much like a school for compulsory education students, which led to its registration being annulled. Both institutions have since filed lawsuits and administrative appeals arguing against the cancellation of their registrations, which prolongs the uncertainty for their students.
The civic group insists that extending legal proceedings would leave students in a precarious educational limbo that could violate their right to learn. They are pressing the Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education to promptly assess the students' academic status and expedite the process for reinstating students to their original schools, to ensure their educational rights are protected during this tumultuous period.
