Removal of Pregnancy and Abortion from Middle School 'Life Safety Education' Classes, Following Ministry of Education's Guidance

Japan's Ministry of Education has instructed schools to remove topics on pregnancy and abortion from their 'Life Safety Education' curriculum, aimed at preventing sexual violence among students.

A middle school in Edogawa, Tokyo, recently held a session on 'Life Safety Education', where topics of children's rights, sexual diversity, puberty changes, and contraception methods were discussed. This program is part of a nationwide initiative by Japan's Ministry of Education for the 2023 academic year to educate students on preventing them from becoming victims or perpetrators of sexual violence. During the session, participants were made aware of the risks associated with their digital presence, emphasizing the importance of obtaining consent before sharing images or videos with others.

The educational session was well-received by both students and parents, with many acknowledging the significance of addressing such topics in a serious manner. Female students expressed that the perception of sexual subjects needs to evolve beyond being a joke or taboo, recognizing that even younger students can be victims of sexual violence and that awareness is crucial. Male students appreciated learning about the responsibilities that come with respect and understanding in relationships, highlighting the fact that much of their sexual knowledge comes from peers rather than structured education.

However, in light of the recent guidance from the Ministry of Education, there has been a push to ensure that curriculum adheres strictly to prescribed educational standards, which led to the removal of sensitive topics such as pregnancy and abortion from discussions. This has sparked conversation around the need for comprehensive sex education in Japan, particularly in regards to equipping students with essential knowledge and tools to navigate their social and personal lives in a responsible manner.
