City Hall inaugurates new night shelter for homeless population in Belém

The City Hall of Belém has inaugurated a new night shelter aimed at accommodating the homeless population.

The City Hall of Belém inaugurated the "Espaço Acolher: Serviço de Acolhimento Noturno Desembargador Paulo Frota" on Thursday, which is designed to provide shelter for homeless individuals. Located in the Campina neighborhood, the facility features freshly painted walls, organized bunk beds, air-conditioned rooms, and can accommodate up to 50 individuals per night. This initiative comes in response to a federal court ruling from September 2025, which mandated the city to implement emergency measures for homeless individuals who had been residing on the steps of the postal service.

The establishment of this shelter also follows a civil public action filed by the Public Defender's Office of the State of Pará (DPE) in 2025, which highlighted structural and sanitary deficiencies in existing shelters. A subsequent inspection by the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) corroborated these claims, emphasizing the inadequacy of current facilities and the insufficient number of beds to support the homeless population in Belém. The inauguration of this new shelter marks an important step in addressing the ongoing issues faced by the homeless in the city.

Thus, this new shelter not only aims to provide immediate relief but also represents an attempt to fulfill legal obligations imposed by the courts and improve the living conditions for a marginalized segment of the population. The municipality's actions may reflect broader social challenges and the need for sustained investment in social services to effectively support vulnerable communities like the homeless in Belém.
