Citizenship

Citizens organized a large-scale protest in Mexico City against governmental attacks on the National Electoral Institute and the Supreme Court in late 2022 and early 2023.

In response to increasing governmental pressure from the palace on the National Electoral Institute (INE), various organizations staged a significant citizen protest in Mexico City on November 13, 2022. Initially planned as a modest gathering, the event saw an unexpectedly large turnout as demonstrators from other cities joined in, culminating in a march from the Ángel de la Independencia to the Monumento a la Revolución. Notably, José Woldenberg, a prominent figure in Mexican civil society, concluded the gathering with a firm call to protect both the INE and democracy itself.

The mobilizations continued on February 26, 2023, as citizens rallied to support the Supreme Court following President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's criticisms of Chief Justice Norma Piña. In a notable incident on February 5 during the Constitution's celebration, Piña's refusal to stand highlighted the independence of the judiciary against executive power. This mobilization encouraged citizens to gather at the Zócalo to assert their support for judicial independence and challenge the perception of the judiciary as subordinate to the executive branch.

These citizen-led protests demonstrate a growing concern among the Mexican populace regarding the state's attempts to undermine electoral and judicial institutions. The large participation reflects a commitment to defending democracy and the rule of law, serving as a reminder of the vital role of civic engagement in holding government accountable and preserving democratic norms in Mexico.
