Gas station worker among five alleged extortionists detained in Quito and Huaquillas

Five alleged extortionists, including a gas station employee, have been arrested in Quito and Huaquillas for threatening local residents.

In a recent operation called Libertad 210, 211, and 212, the National Police of Ecuador arrested five individuals involved in a extortion scheme targeting residents of Quito and Huaquillas. The suspects were reportedly intimidating people through text messages, demanding significant sums of money. Community reports had previously alerted authorities to the ongoing criminal activity, leading to the immediate apprehension of the individuals in a coordinated effort as they were found committing the acts.

Among those arrested was a gas station dispatcher believed to be part of a larger network operating from northern Quito. The confirmation of their involvement came as agents conducted raids in both cities, during which they recovered seven mobile phones, clothing, and payment receipts that were linked to the extortion activities. The swift response from the police showcases their commitment to addressing community concerns and reducing criminal threats in these areas.

The Interior Minister, John Reimberg, outlined the importance of this operation and the role of community reports in tackling extortion. With the recent rise in similar crimes, the government's focus on enforcing stricter measures against such activities signals a proactive approach aimed at restoring safety and confidence among local citizens. The arrest of these suspects also highlights the ongoing efforts to dismantle organized crime groups in Ecuador.
