Police dismantles extortion network demanding $2,000 from a merchant in El Oro: two suspects operated from the Penitentiary

Ecuador's National Police has arrested four individuals linked to an extortion scheme that threatened a merchant in El Oro.

In a significant operation under the state of emergency in Ecuador, the National Police have apprehended four individuals connected to threats against a merchant in Santa Rosa, El Oro province. The investigation was triggered by a complaint received about threatening messages and phone calls in which the perpetrators demanded $2,000 in exchange for not harming the victim and her family.

The Anti-Kidnapping and Extortion Unit (Unase), responding to the dangers posed, launched an immediate investigation that involved coordination with the Special Operations Group and the General Directorate of Intelligence. Their efforts led to the arrest of two women suspects in different locations within the country, specifically in El Oro and Guayas. The investigation revealed that this criminal network included two additional suspects who were operating from the Litoral Penitentiary in Guayaquil, demonstrating the pervasive nature of organized crime in Ecuador.

This case highlights the ongoing challenges of extortion and organized crime in Ecuador, as criminal rings often exploit vulnerable individuals through threats and intimidation. The successful takedown of this network not only brings justice for the victim but also sends a strong message regarding law enforcement's commitment to combat such crimes during the state of emergency declared to improve public safety.
