Seventies man dies after being hit by a car while crossing the street in Gwangyang, South Jeolla
A man in his seventies was killed after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a crosswalk in Gwangyang, South Jeolla.
On the afternoon of the 26th, at around 12:20 PM, a man in his seventies was fatally hit by a car driven by a man in his forties while crossing a crosswalk in Yonggang-ri, Gwangyang-eup, South Jeolla Province. Despite being transported to a nearby hospital, the elderly man succumbed to his injuries shortly after the incident. It was noted that there were no traffic lights at the crosswalk where the accident occurred. The driver, identified only as Mr. A, was not under the influence of alcohol nor was he driving without a license. Reports suggest that he stated to the police that he “failed to see the pedestrian” before the collision. This raises concerns about driver awareness and pedestrian safety, particularly in areas lacking adequate traffic control measures like signals. The police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances of the accident, formally charging the driver with a homicide under the Traffic Accident Investigation Special Act. This incident not only highlights the dangers faced by pedestrians in areas without proper traffic management but also underscores the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
