Elderly woman hit by a vehicle on the crosswalk dies after two days in hospital in Jaú
A 76-year-old woman who was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street in Jaú has died after two days in the hospital.
An elderly woman named Carmen Ferreira Dias, aged 76, tragically died after being involved in a traffic accident when she was hit while crossing at a pedestrian crosswalk on Avenida João Ferraz Neto in Jaú, São Paulo. She was admitted to the Santa Casa de Jaú on Sunday, the day of the accident, and despite being treated for severe injuries including fractures to her pelvis and skull, she could not survive the injuries after a surgical procedure on her femur.
The driver responsible for the hit-and-run incident fled the scene and did not provide assistance. He turned himself into the police the following day but was released after being questioned since there was no initial arrest due to the circumstances. Security cameras captured the moment of the incident, showing Carmen crossing the street before being struck by the vehicle; the impact caused her to be thrown several meters before the driver reversed and left the scene.
This tragic incident raises serious concerns regarding road safety and the consequences of hit-and-run scenarios in urban environments. The failure of the driver to offer help after causing such harm not only highlighted his negligence but also emphasizes the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to protect vulnerable pedestrians, especially the elderly, from such devastating accidents.
