51-year-old Gombe man jailed for selling minor
A 51-year-old man from Gombe, Nigeria, has been sentenced to prison for selling a one-year-old boy in a child trafficking case.
Hamidu Damisa, a 51-year-old resident of Putuki Pargale in Nigeria's Balanga Local Government Area, was sentenced to imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Gombe for child trafficking offences. He was accused of selling a one-year-old boy named Destiny from the same locality. The charges against Damisa included two counts related to child trafficking, which he pleaded not guilty to.
The prosecution, led by counsel Musa Yila Kopyo, presented evidence to support the charges, which were based on Nigeria's Child Trafficking Law of 2015. During the trial, witnesses were presented, including Damisa's wife, whose testimony contributed to the case against him. This case highlights the serious issues of child trafficking and the legal framework in place to address such crimes in Nigeria.
Damisa's conviction serves not only as a punishment for his crime but also as a deterrent against child trafficking, a significant concern that affects vulnerable populations in the country. The stringent penalties under the Child Trafficking Law underscore the government's commitment to combating this challenging issue and protecting children's rights in Nigeria.
