Pakistani Military Bombs Afghan Capital; Large-scale Military Clashes at the Border
The Pakistani military conducted airstrikes on military bases controlled by the Taliban in Kabul, Afghanistan, following a series of cross-border attacks, leading to significant military clashes.
Early on the 27th, a large explosion rocked Kabul, Afghanistan, following airstrikes by the Pakistani military on military positions of the Taliban, who currently control Afghanistan. The strikes are believed to be retaliation for a cross-border assault carried out by the Taliban on the Pakistani military a few hours earlier, indicating a significant escalation of military clashes in the region. The airstrikes reportedly targeted seven locations near the border, resulting in the deaths of over 80 individuals, as part of Pakistan's efforts to eliminate safe havens for anti-government forces such as the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
The Taliban had issued warnings of retaliation and conducted several attacks on the Pakistani military posts in the border areas on the night of the 26th, claiming to have killed 55 Pakistani soldiers and captured many more. In response to these events, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that there would be no compromise in the defense of the nation. The reported airstrikes targeted military bases not only in Kabul but also in Kandahar and Paktika, revealing the scale and scope of Pakistan's military strategy against the Taliban.
Relations between Pakistan and the Taliban, historically close, have soured since the Taliban's resurgence in Afghanistan in 2021, particularly over the Taliban's handling of the TTP. In October of the previous year, significant military clashes occurred across the border region, resulting in over 200 deaths on both sides. Although a ceasefire was agreed upon with mediation from Qatar, skirmishes have continued, indicating ongoing tensions and the precarious nature of security in the region.
