Onnibussi drove into a ditch in Joutsa - 'So to speak, out of the game'
A bus crashed into a ditch on Highway 4 in Joutsa during icy conditions, causing traffic disruption.
A bus from Onnibussi veered into a ditch on Thursday night near Joutsa, Finland, around 10 PM. A witness, Iivari Pihl, recorded a video showing the bus, tilted with its front in the air, at a location between the Joutsan ABC and Koivutallintie intersections. Pihl noted that he was on his way to Helsinki and observed vehicles sliding along the icy road before witnessing the bus in the ditch. The driver exited the vehicle to assist the passengers, whereas truck drivers who had stopped nearby also came to help resolve the situation.
Traffic in the area was halted for approximately 20 minutes as vehicles struggled to navigate the slippery conditions. Pihl described the road as being very icy, and the traffic became severely congested, with vehicles moving slowly in a single line. Despite the chaos, he reported not seeing any rescue personnel at the scene. The incident underscores the dangers posed by winter weather driving in Finland, as Pihl mentioned that the bus was not the only vehicle that had difficulties on the icy road, with other trucks also having issues.
As colder conditions continue to plague the region, authorities may need to focus on enhancing road safety measures during winter months to prevent such accidents. The bus mishap serves as a reminder for drivers to exercise caution and adapt to changing road conditions, particularly during adverse weather.
