Playwrights’ ‘thrilling’ debuts share the Susan Smith Blackburn prize

The Susan Smith Blackburn prize celebrates debut plays by female, transgender, and non-binary playwrights, awarding joint winners Hannah Doran and Ro Reddick.

The 48th annual Susan Smith Blackburn prize has been awarded to two debut playwrights, Hannah Doran for her play 'The Meat Kings!' and Ro Reddick for 'Cold War Choir Practice'. Both writers will receive a cash prize of $25,000 and a signed print by artist Willem de Kooning. This prestigious award recognizes the contributions of female, transgender, and non-binary voices in the theatre industry, encouraging diverse narratives and storytelling in contemporary theatre.

Hannah Doran's play is a poignant exploration set in a butcher’s shop in New York, dealing with themes of immigration, addiction, and the challenges of life following imprisonment. The play was staged at the Park theatre in London and previously won a new writing prize from Papatango theatre company, highlighting its critical acclaim. Judge Julie Hesmondhalgh praised it for its strong dialogue and character development, likening its depth to the works of Arthur Miller, indicating its relevance to current societal issues.

On the other hand, Ro Reddick's 'Cold War Choir Practice', which also received substantial recognition, further enriches the array of stories that the prize acknowledges. Submitted by the US-based Clubbed Thumb, this play caters to modern theatrical themes and narratives, showcasing the importance of new voices in the arts. The dual recognition of these playwrights underscores a broader commitment to diversity and representation in the theatre community, aimed at addressing various social issues through the medium of performance.
