The Corruption Case of the Plant Protection Service: STT Questioned Former Head J. Kornijenko
Former head of the Plant Protection Service, J. Kornijenko, was questioned by STT in connection to a corruption investigation involving multiple officials from the agency.
In a significant development regarding corruption allegations within Lithuania's Plant Protection Service, former head J. Kornijenko was interrogated by the Special Investigations Service (STT) for approximately three and a half hours. Upon leaving the STT office, Kornijenko, who is among six officials suspected of corruption, refused to disclose further details citing a confidentiality agreement. His appointment as head of the agency was made by former agriculture minister Kazys Starkevičius, indicating a possible political connection in the ongoing investigation.
The STT is currently delving into alleged corruption linked to the agency, with a particular focus on bribery related to the actions of its officials. The investigation has garnered significant attention as it has also led to searches in the offices of prominent parliament members, including Kazys Starkevičius and Saulius Skvernelis, who have been implicated in a broader examination of systemic corruption. Furthermore, the investigation has expanded to include 14 individuals, among them former adviser to S. Skvernelis, Agnė Silickienė, revealing the pervasive nature of the alleged corruption.
This inquiry reflects widespread concerns regarding political favoritism and its impact on administrative functions within the agricultural sector in Lithuania. As the STT continues to pursue its investigation, the implications could lead to significant political ramifications for those implicated, particularly as public trust in government institutions is at stake. These developments may alter the landscape for future governance and oversight in the agricultural administration, emphasizing the need for transparency and accountability in public service.
