El-Rufai has become a political prisoner of war – ADC chieftain
ADC chieftain Oladimeji Fabiyi criticizes the Nigerian government for what he sees as politically motivated actions against former Kaduna governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Oladimeji Fabiyi, a member of the National Working Committee of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned the Nigerian Federal Government for its alleged vengeful actions towards Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna State. Fabiyi described El-Rufai as a political prisoner, arguing that the government's decision to detain him is rooted in fear of his political influence and standing. He asserted that while numerous members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) face corruption allegations, the government has chosen to target opposition leaders instead.
In his statement, Fabiyi suggested that President Bola Tinubu has recognized El-Rufai's considerable political clout, which has led to a perceived coordinated attack from major anti-corruption and security agencies in Nigeria, namely the EFCC, DSS, and ICPC. The ADC chieftain characterized the government's actions as not merely about corruption, but more about suppressing political dissent and disrupting opposition leadership. His remarks imply a significant concern regarding the implications for democracy and political plurality in Nigeria.
As allegations of political repression arise, Fabiyi's statements also reflect broader anxieties among opposition parties about the state of governance under Tinubu’s administration. The notion that the government is selectively enforcing laws against political adversaries raises questions not just about El-Rufai's situation but also about the general trajectory of Nigeria’s political landscape and adherence to democratic norms.
