Thessaloniki Metro: 6 stations will close from 10 a.m. on Saturday

Six stations of the Thessaloniki metro will remain closed on Saturday, February 28, due to a gathering commemorating the third anniversary of the Tempi railway tragedy.

On Saturday, February 28, six metro stations in Thessaloniki will be closed starting at 10 a.m. as per instructions from the Hellenic Police. This closure coincides with a gathering to mark three years since the devastating railway tragedy in Tempi, an event that shocked the nation and raised concerns over rail safety. The stations affected include the New Railway Station, Democracy, Venizelos, Agia Sofia, Sindrivan, and the University station.

The operational and maintenance company of the metro, THEMA, announced the temporary suspension of services at these stations, indicating that the directive came directly from police authorities. This measure is part of broader efforts to ensure safety and security during the gathering, which is expected to draw a significant number of participants honoring the victims of the railway accident.

Additionally, on the same day, the Hellenic Railway Workers' Federation has called for a strike, which may lead to further delays and restrictions on train schedules or services on the metro line. This combination of station closures and potential strikes highlights ongoing issues regarding transportation services in Greece, particularly in relation to public safety and worker rights.
